Prolonged Stress Equals Adrenal Fatigue – Five Ways You Can Help Your Body Recover Now

By Susan J Parker

When your body experiences stress, your adrenal glands pump out stress-related chemicals such as adrenaline and cortisol. When the stress is unrelenting, you begin to experience adrenal fatigue, and the glands may start working erratically. Sometimes you produce too much adrenaline, causing you to feel panicky or moody. Sometimes the adrenals don’t produce enough, and you feel exhausted and unable to cope.

Here are five ways you can help your body recover from adrenal fatigue.

1. Take frequent breaks. Allow yourself time to relax throughout your day. Researchers have documented that people who don’t allow themselves downtime may feel more stressed.

2. Get more sleep. In addition to a full eight or more hours of sleep each night, a midday nap has a very positive impact on your body, especially when you are feeling stressed. A nap actually triggers your body to produce hormones that balance the stress-generated cortisol your body produced.

3. Exercise daily. Exercising during stressful times burns off stress-related chemicals, removing them out of your bloodstream. Simultaneously, exercise causes your body to release endorphins, our body’s natural mood-elevating chemicals.

4. Relax your mind. If you can’t quiet your mind enough for meditation, try guided imagery. Based on the concept that body and mind are connected, guided imagery (sometimes called visualization) uses suggestions to guide your imagination toward a relaxed state. With the help of an instructor, CDs or MP3 recordings, or even scripts from a book you record yourself, your body will respond as though what you are imagining is quite real.

5. Kick the caffeine. Rather than coffee, drink some herbal tea. Chamomile tea can soothe anxious nerves as well as calm the upset stomach that sometimes accompanies stress or anxiety. Tulsi (holy basil) tea eases stress as does lavender tea. Lemon balm makes a wonderful mood lifting tea. You can make tea with fresh or dried herbs.
